About the Author
Scott Lobdell is a veteran of the comic book industry, having worked with nearly every major American comic book publisher. Lobdell is best known for his work on Marvel's X-Men franchise in the 1990's, penning such works as Uncanny X-Men, Excalibur, The Age of Apocalypse, Generation X, amongst others. He is currently the writer of SUPERMAN and TEEN TITANS, each a part of DC Comics - The New 52.

This volume collects issues 0, 13-17.
I have not read volume 2 of the New 52 Superman, but after having read volume 1 I can honestly say this volume is a huge improvement. The third creative team, formerly of the Red Hood and the Outlaws series, writer, Scott Lobdell, and artist, Kenneth Rocafort, turn in a "new" and interesting Superman. The adventure he is involved in is worthy of a Superman story as it is cool to world build Krypton and bring aspects of it into Superman's modern life and world even if it detracts from his famous title of "Krypton's Last Son". I do have some issues with character portrayal and writing style however.
The volume kicks off with Superman's 0 issue, which goes back to before Krypton's destruction to follow Jor-El and show of how much of an adventurous spirit and brilliant mind Kal's dad was. It also shows off how brilliant and resilient Kal's mom, Laura, was. The issue shows that Jor and Laura El find that Krypton's demise might have been in the works by a doomsday worshiping cult. A clever twist to add to the trials of Kal's parents on Krypton.
The rest of the volume is set in the modern day and part of the "H'el on Earth" crossover also involving the "Supergirl" and "Superboy" titles. Those issues are not in here but can be found in their respective volume 3 collections or the actual "Superman: H'el on Earth" collection which includes all the series issues involved in the crossover. The issues presented here are all the reader needs as Lobdell uses expositiony dialogue, overdone often, to fill in any important events that happened in the other titles.
