Taskforce operators Pike Logan and Jennifer Cahill are used to putting their lives at risk, but in The Polaris Protocol it's Jennifer's brother and countless more innocents who face unfathomable violence and bloodshed. Pike and Jennifer are in Turkmenistan with the Taskforce - a top-secret antiterrorist unit that operates outside US law - when Jennifer gets a call from her brother, Jack. Working on an investigative report into the Mexican drug cartels, Jack Cahill has unknowingly gotten caught between two rival groups. His desperate call to his sister is his last before he's kidnapped. In their efforts to rescue Jack, Pike and Jennifer uncover a plot much more insidious than illegal drug trafficking - the cartel that put a target on Jack's back has discovered a GPS hack with the power to effectively debilitate the United States. The hack allows a user to send false GPS signals, making it possible to manipulate everything from traffic signals and banking wire transfers to cruise missiles, but only while the system's loophole remains in place.

Reading a Taskforce novel is an adrenalin rush. While that could be said of many action novels, Brad Taylor's Taskforce novels have the additional virtue of being intelligent. Taylor has a clear, cliché-free writing style that helps the story move swiftly. Plentiful action scenes contribute to the pace, but Taylor avoids the overdone and over-the-top nonsense that pervades so many action novels. The plots are farfetched but plausible enough for fun escapist fiction. I keep waiting for Taylor to stumble, given the speed at which he is churning out Taskforce novels, but the quality continues to be consistent.
The Polaris Protocol begins with the Taskforce chasing a bad guy in Turkmenistan while different bad guys in Mexico are messing with the GPS system. The reader knows that it's only a matter of time before the Taskforce takes on the new threat to national security. As is always true in a Taskforce novel, everything that can go wrong does ... until the end, of course, when Pike Logan and his team clean up the mess. It's a formula, but it works.
Another part of Taylor's successful formula has been: Pike wants to do something to defeat a menace; Pike is ordered not to do it; Pike does it anyway, saving the world (or at least some part of it) in the process. Taylor varies that formula a bit in The Polaris Protocol. This time Pike is giving the orders and Jennifer is disregarding them. As always, Taylor strikes a workable balance between action and character development, while the addition of friction between Pike and Jennifer adds interest to the story.
The friction arises because Jennifer's brother Jack, a journalist investigating a Mexican drug cartel, accidentally discovers a bigger story that leads to his kidnapping.
Lt Colonel Brad Taylor, a retired officer with experience in the U.S. Army's elite Delta Force brings us the fifth in a series of novels featuring Pike Logan and his partner Jennifer Cahill. Pike heads up a unit of the Task force, a top secret anti terrorist organization that operates outside of the United States reporting only to the highest echelons of the American government.
The book opens with Pike's unit on assignment in Turkmenistan and proceeding to complete the work there when Jennifer receives a call from her brother Jack. He is a newspaper reporter and on assignment investigating two Mexican Drug Cartels. Just after advising his sister that he is in trouble he is kidnapped by one of the Cartels. Jennifer requests and get permission to leave the current assignment and travel to Mexico to help her brother. Not surprising, she is shortly joined by Pike and then the rest of the group that work with them. They are in time to discover a plot to hack into the U.S. GPS system and by doing so completely disrupt most government and private systems creating utter chaos. One of the cartels is preparing to buy the hacking equipment in order to sell it for a huge amount to America's enemies.
Colonel Taylor did a good deal of research to bring places and customs in and around the Mexican capital of Mexico City to life. He is conversant with tourist areas, areas where the rich live as well as the poor and describes them quite well. He also fleshes out the cartels for readers that only hear about them via newspaper or T.V. These groups are completely devoid of any feeling for human life. They have no compunction about killing one or many people, nor do they show mercy to their own if any doubt exists about loyalty.
