For those of you who wonder why video games cost 60 dollars a pop nowadays, reading this book will hopefully show you why. "Making Great Games" is a delightfully insightful book into the intricacies of making a video game, and all of the little decisions that go into it's production. The book is extremely detailed and covers aspects that many people might not ever consider.
Most interesting is the way it illustrates how each tiny decision at various times during the development cycle can have vastly different effects on the production, marketing, and crew. Many video games are just seconds away from huge alterations, which can ultimately change the entire way a game is marketed and viewed. While I usually have a general contempt for marketing in general, it's fascinating to see how close some games get to being an entirely different beast altogether. All it takes is one decision, and a video game moulds and evolves into something nearly unrecognizable. This book showcases how important those infinitesimal decisions can be in the final product.
I found the chapter on "Uncharted 2" to be the most telling. Naughty Dog, the creators of the game, come across as deeply caring individuals who are heavily invested in releasing the best game possible. The book also recognizes the importance of depth and scope that goes into video game production, and that most of the time the creators just don't have the time to fit their ideas into the schedule. Duke Nukem Forever is a great example of how extending production schedules to accommodate a massive and ever-evolving technological landscape can ultimately doom a video game.
