Knitting is more than the pretty pictures and lovely colors. Any knitter who has advanced beyond scarves, shawls and socks (and sometimes even socks) knows that there is a lot of trial and error learning involved and little tricks of technique to be discovered to produce lovely, wearable items, especially in the arenas of lace, cables, double-knitting and color knitting.
I ordered Knitting Masterclass hoping to discover advanced techniques that I hadn't either figured out myself or that weren't covered in other specialty books on the techniques listed. I was mildly disappointed by the book. There is nothing earth shattering here and the techniques that are detailed are covered in much more depth in books on the specific techniques mentioned. However, as a go to resource covering several different techniques for the beginning or intermediate knitter who doesn't have an extensive library? I think this book could be an amazing one volume resource.
Techniques covered include: Yarn Substitution and not just by weight, but a good description of yarn substitution in cable and lace patterns. This alone might convince me to keep the book. Reading schematics and analyzing them for pattern and size changes and yarn substitution is also covered in detail. These I haven't seen covered in this depth in other books. Then casting on and off and different styles of knitting are covered, including magic cast on and magic loop methods. Cable knitting, including fixing mistakes and the infamous loose stitch at the end of the cable is covered. Lace knitting and fixing mistakes in lace is also covered. However, those with other cable or lace books will find this information and more in technique specific books.
This comprehensive book is a true masterclass for the intermediate and experienced knitter. The book contains over 20 technical workshops and 15 patterns for the knitter. The patterns and workshops all come from 'The Knitter' magazine which was launched in 2009.
The first class is in Choosing and Substituting Yarns. This is something I really appreciate as a knitter as I often have questions about using a yarn that is not designated in a pattern. The Sedgemoor Cardigan which is the pattern included with this masterclass is a lovely sweater, one that I might knit some day.
Casting On and Casting Off provides a plethora of types of cast-ons and cast-offs along with a pattern for a lovely cabled hat.
Different Styles of Knitting includes knitting in the round, using two circular needles at the same time, eastern knitting, western knitting, and a lovely pattern for Nexus socks.
Cables is a very useful chapter and I love to knit cable patterns. It includes information on how to read cable charts,, fixing cable mistakes, and includes a pattern for a lovely cowl called Baird Collar. There are also patterns for Cable Cushion Covers which would look lovely in any home.
Liberating Lace includes ways to block lace, how to fix mistakes in lace knitting, and includes a pattern for a lovely Golden Wheat Lace Shawl.
Fair Isle Techniques is very useful. It explains how to use the left hand to work two yarns or how to use both hands to work two yarns and even how to use the right hand to work both yarns. It explains how to deal with yarn ends and join new yarn. There is a color wheel and and explanation of color theory to assist the knitter in choosing colors for Fair Isle patterns.
