Light Art Performance Photography (LAPP) is a unique form of art that was invented and developed by the authors of this book. It is one of the first forms of art using light as the medium to gain widespread attention. Unlike other types of light painting, LAPP does not just involve illuminating existing objects; it also requires the photographer to create and capture new subjects constructed entirely of light. LAPP pieces are usually shot at night using long exposure times to capture complex sequences of precisely choreographed movements. Real-world surroundings are combined with transient, light-based elements to produce spectacular effects.
The defining characteristic of LAPP is the harmony between the background and the harsh light often used to produce the individual image elements. The symbiosis between photographer and performer gives each work a degree of reproducibility that is essential if it is to be accurately restaged at a later time.
The first part of this book describes the evolution of LAPP as told by its originators, while the middle section goes on to present a gallery of spectacular, large format LAPP images. The final section offers some basic steps and tips to give you a starting point for creating your own LAPP artworks.

I've been waiting for this book with eager anticipation for some time now. The pictures in it are stunning. The format is stunning. But it's not what it claims to be.
The part of the product description that convinced me to buy this book is "...large format LAPP images together with information on how the individual scenes were created. The final section offers a workshop that uses sample projects to explain the LAPP creation process."
In short, this is a lie. Let me paraphrase the 'workshop'.
step 1: take a daylight photo
step 2: take a dusk photo
step 3: take another one
step 4: take a night photo
step 5: take another one
step 6: take another one
step 7: take another one
step 8: add the light magic.
How do you add the light magic you might ask? No idea. They don't say. In all 210 pages they show you great pictures but there's not a word on how it's done.
This book is a complete, beautiful, let down. I'm returning my copy immediately and spending my time here instead [...]

This is the best book about light painting I've seen! Lighting painting is the art and craft of generating images in a dark (or mostly dark) environment by exposing the camera's sensor to an intentionally wielded light source, such as a flashlight or a light covered with a gel.
While I have some quibbles with the book, let me start with the good things:
- The images are imaginitive, varied, and simply wonderful and magical.
- My primary interest at night is mostly capturing available light of various kinds (e.g., stars, car headlights), not creating light. But if I wanted to "expand my horizons" to include light painting in a serious way, I would find numerous ideas in this book. Truly inspirational.
- The book is handsomely designed and beautifully reproduced.
Where this book very slightly disappoints is in discussion of techniques. I don't particularly appreciate being told that "the technical details" of the lights the authors use "remain secret." An index and a glossary would be useful features. Speaking of a glossary, some basic terminology is puzzling: for example, what exactly does "LAPP" [Edit: OK, now I see it in the subtitle and Amazon product description: "Light Art Performance Photography"] stand for? Perhaps the issue is one of translation from the German.
But overall, I seldom see books about night photography that are this inspiring, and I plan to study every image in the book carefully.
