When they saw me, they all came to the edge of the shelter and looked out at me. For only a few seconds, they formed this fantastic, symmetrical composition right in front of me, each one of them steadfastly staring at me.
I took this image in Cabárceno Wildlife Park in Cantabria, Spain. It is the largest wildlife park in Europe. The animals live in semi-free conditions in an extraordinary environment enclosed by a spectacular landscape.
The Watusi cattle are originally from Africa. In Cabárceno, they usually spend their days grazing on the hillside. The day I took this photograph it was raining, so they went into a shelter in their section of the park.
While I was setting up my tripod and camera, I was not even considering that I would take this picture. I did not expect this magical moment to happen. I had my camera on the tripod, and had just a little time to change the aperture to f/9 to get all the cattle into focus. The setting and situation only lasted for a few seconds.
The background was naturally dark and the very low light illuminated only their heads and horns, while their bodies were enveloped by the darkness of the shelter.

This book is a collection of photographs from the website 1x.com. 1x.com is a website to display photographs, which is curated to insure the quality of the photographs. Any photographer can submit pictures but only those found to be worthy by the curators appear on the site.
The book is divided into sections by genre, like architecture, macro, and nature, although any single image might be classified into more than one genre. The individual images appear on the left hand side of the gutter and on the right side is a general discussion of the work written by the photographer, occasionally including some hints. The hints are often quite banal, like always shoot in raw, or plan your work, or the opposite, be spontaneous. There is also a short biography of the photographer and a brief section on post-processing.
The images are all quite good, although they often, in my opinion, go over the top as far as saturation, and to a lesser degree, the amount of manipulation. If you are interested in a collection of random pretty pictures, this is a fine book.
According to the founder of 1x.com, however, the book is meant to be an instructional manual to allow you to apply the ideas presented in the pictures, and using that goal, the book is less successful. The individual photographers are all over the place in their discussions of the pictures. Some discuss the goal they were trying to achieve in capturing the image, others what they generally want to achieve in photography, and still others details of the post-processing. One can look at an individual picture that he or she particularly values, and then read the text and try to emulate the author-photographer's ideas.
