Review

1. From Marty Yawnick, from his review on his very popular iPhone site, LifeInLoFi.com:
"One of the great things about this book is how quickly each tutorial gets personal. This is less like learning from a textbook and more like being tutored by an old friend.  [The book] covers a broad range of photographic and iPhone art essentials and techniques including lighting, focus, composition, retouching, color correcting, processing, compositing, blending, masking on iPhone, adding texture, collage and much more."

2. From Geri Centonze on her Art of MOB blog:

"Just over a year ago, I discovered that I could use my iPhone as a means for creating art. Now, there's a fabulous resource that EVERY iPhone photographer should have. It's the newly released book, The Art of iPhone Photography: Creating Great Photos and Art on Your iPhone by Bob Weil and Nicki Fitz-Gerald."

3. From M. Braun's Amazon review:

"I liked this book so much that I returned my Kindle version and ordered a "book" book so I could flip pages, turn down pages, ponder, savor, try out, underline, make notes, etc. This is the perfect book for learning how to work with your photographs on the iPhone."

The iPhone camera, who would ever imagine that after thought on a cell phone, could produce amazing art. The Art of iPhone Photography not only dispels that myth, it then goes on to describe the techniques used to create that art. It is an impressive book.

Where to start? For the photography alone, as a coffee table book, this book is worth the purchase price. Never mind this is one of most intense photography books I have ever read. The Art of iPhone Photography does something I have never seen in any art form, it describes in illustarted step by step detail how the masters created an incredible image.

In a rare twist for photography books, the writing is perfection. The authors edited this book down to perfection.

The first step in creating this book was to find excellent photography. The authors have found work that ranges from masterpieces to good images. Because this is a compilation of 45 different photographers, there are styles I loved and others I didn't care for. In the end, all are technical masterpieces and amazed me that they were shot with the iPhone camera.

The over 350 page book is organized around tutorials, with a gallery intermission in the middle. Each tutorial starts with a single page reproduction of the final image. On the next pages there is a description of what the tutorial is about, the kinds of things that will be learned. Then the photographer describes their thought process, creative inspiration, and why they chose the apps or steps they did. Then the tutorial starts with which apps were used followed by descriptions of the step and pictures illustrating what was done. I particularly loved the starting raw image. Sometimes I would look at that image and think; this was the inspiration for that finished image?
I've read lots of books on creating nice photographs, that usually presume you have a fancy DSLR and Photoshop. Of course, where most people take photographs now is on their phones and if they do anything to "sweeten" the image it's usually just a quick adjustment applied in one of the easy apps that are available for free. It turns out a lot more is possible, and there are really next to no limits for the creative iPhone photographer, willing to try new things. This book is an attempt to show some of the possibilities.

I should make clear up front that this is not a quick guide to taking better basic photographs on the iPhone. It's really designed as an introduction to and source of inspiration for using a variety of apps on the phone to capturing and refining artistic photographs and for turning photographic elements into digital artworks. The first part is focused on artistic photography and the second part on illustration and fine art. Each part consists of a series of tutorials, each focused on key works created by established artists who have been inspired by the possibilities of the iPhone and its various photographic and artistic apps.

What's really fantastic about the book is that we don't just see their photographs, but they walk us through the process whereby they were created. They talk about their aims in each photograph, what they did to prepare, and the steps they followed to complete them. They identify the apps they used, they talk about how they captured their original images, and then how they used apps to refine them. Each of these tutorials is very clear and nicely illustrated.
