About the Author
Richard LaMotte grew up in southeastern Virginia and has made frequent trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina over four decades. He currently resides on Maryland’s Eastern Shore where his wife, Nancy, started a sea-glass jewelry business using shards from the nearby Chesapeake Bay. While researching glass history for a lecture in 2002, he began to pursue answers to questions posed by his wife’s customers. This led to more extensive research into glass colors, as well as the physics and chemistry behind the glass forms found in a shoreline environment.
Since 1984, Richard has worked for a water analysis company with products that rely heavily on detailed color matching and has written two consumer handbooks on water testing.
In his spare time, he has spent hours on the Chesapeake carefully studying close to 30,000 shards of sea glass to produce this in-depth study.
Celia Pearson has been an assignment and fine art photographer for over 25 years. As principal of Pearson Photography in Annapolis, Maryland she has earned a national reputation for her photographs of designed spaces. Her images have appeared in a variety of publications including Coastal Living, Chesapeake Life, Style Magazine, Metropolitan Home and Southern Accents.
As a child, Celia summered on the Maine coast. Her love of the shore is apparent in the recurring studies of its treasures that appear in her fine art photographs. Gallery representation on the East Coast includes the Carla Massoni Gallery in Chestertown, Maryland, where she first met Richard LaMotte. When he asked Celia to photograph Pure SEA GLASS, she was intrigued by the notion of exploring the LaMotte’s collection of sea glass with her camera. Not only was she captivated by its luminous qualities, but she also discovered an unanticipated beauty in the man0made forms from which sea glass derives. For more, please visit www.celiapearson.com.

I was born in a coastal town and have always loved the ocean, walking on the beach, sailing - almost everything that has to do with the sea. When I was a little girl, my mother used to take me for walks along the coast, especially after a storm, to see what strange and interesting items had washed up on shore. So it is surprising that I have never collected sea glass, until recently that is. I was working on a craft project for a gift and thought that a few pieces of sea glass would make a beautiful and meaningful addition. Once I looked into acquiring the glass my interest peaked. So before I went any further, I bought a copy of Richard LaMotte's renowned book "Pure Sea Glass: Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems" on the advice of a longtime collector and jewelry maker.
This is an excellent volume, especially for beginners who are interested in learning about, searching for and collecting sea glass. A major added attraction is that there are over 150 exquisite and elegant photographs by Celia Pearson included here, presenting some of the beat specimens ever collected, along with a vast array of classical glassware from around the world that is often its source. The visuals are displayed in a manner that reminds me of Japanese Zen aesthetics. I am not a big coffee table book person, but my copy is on my table and most people who sit in my living room for longer than 15 minutes usually pick it up and peruse with delight.
The book is a comprehensive guide, chock full of information on finding and identifying these gems, the bits of aged glass, enhanced by years beneath the sea or caught in the tides that wash our coasts.
