This book collects the entire story of Superman's epic battle with Doomsday ending in the death of the Man of Steel.
It starts with Superman aiding the Underworlder's in their struggle against a group who wants to kill them, in that issue you see Doomsday escape his underground cell and make his way to the surface. The story continues in an issue of Justice League where the group gets decimated by Doomsday. Superman catches wind of their fight and makes his way to Ohio where the brawl is happening. Superman arrives on the scene and the battle commences. There isn't any character development in the story, but there isn't meant to be. It's just a knock down, drag out slug fest that moves across the country and ends up in the heart of Metropolis. Superman ends up fighting alone against Doomsday, with the battle ending in front of the Daily Planet building. After being reassured by Lois that he has put Doomsday down for good, Superman succumbs to his injuries and dies.
This story is the first appearance of Doomsday, a seemingly unstoppable monster who can take everything the Man of Steel can dish out and return it 10 fold. He has made numerous appearances over the years, but this was the best use of the character in my book.
I suggest you buy the two follow up books: "World Without a Superman" and "Return of Superman." It's an epic trilogy, and it leaves you wanting more. One neat thing is that as the issues go along, the number of panels on each page goes down. When the death of Superman is 4 issues away, that issue has 4 panels on every page. 2 issues away and it has 2 panels on each page. It's a unique way of counting down to the Man of Steel's last stand in the city he cares about most.
