Review
"It's very difficult to overstate the importance of the
Death of Superman and its following arcs...DC claims that this is the number 1 selling graphic novel of all time. And while the story itself is dramatic and impacting, it's what this collection kicks off that really elevates it to legendary status. It's something that all true Superman fans have to read at least once." --
Phillip Carson, acomicbookblog.com"The only comic that ever made me cry; the story is told superbly, the art is incredible, and the emotion is palpable. The final fight with Doomsday is amazingly captured, and I truly enjoyed the expanding panels throughout the series until that final issue where every page was a splash-page. The story was just that big and the expanding of the art helped to reflect that. If you've ever been a Superman fan then this is a must-read." --
Jamie Sigal, goodreads.com"
The Death of Superman remains a seminal moment in the history of comics and the character." --
Michael Bailey"One of the most famous comic-book stories of all-time, as the murderous creature known as Doomsday comes charging towards Metropolis with only Superman able to stop him. We know Doomsday means business because we see him tear apart the entire Justice League. Only Superman can save his adopted city and the woman he loves and he finds a way to save the day and kill Doomsday, but in the process, he gives up his own life. You don't get much more dramatic than actually killing off freakin' SUPERMAN." --

This book collects the entire story of Superman's epic battle with Doomsday ending in the death of the Man of Steel.
It starts with Superman aiding the Underworlder's in their struggle against a group who wants to kill them, in that issue you see Doomsday escape his underground cell and make his way to the surface. The story continues in an issue of Justice League where the group gets decimated by Doomsday. Superman catches wind of their fight and makes his way to Ohio where the brawl is happening. Superman arrives on the scene and the battle commences. There isn't any character development in the story, but there isn't meant to be. It's just a knock down, drag out slug fest that moves across the country and ends up in the heart of Metropolis. Superman ends up fighting alone against Doomsday, with the battle ending in front of the Daily Planet building. After being reassured by Lois that he has put Doomsday down for good, Superman succumbs to his injuries and dies.
This story is the first appearance of Doomsday, a seemingly unstoppable monster who can take everything the Man of Steel can dish out and return it 10 fold. He has made numerous appearances over the years, but this was the best use of the character in my book.
I suggest you buy the two follow up books: "World Without a Superman" and "Return of Superman." It's an epic trilogy, and it leaves you wanting more. One neat thing is that as the issues go along, the number of panels on each page goes down. When the death of Superman is 4 issues away, that issue has 4 panels on every page. 2 issues away and it has 2 panels on each page. It's a unique way of counting down to the Man of Steel's last stand in the city he cares about most.
