I have collected books on design, architecture and houses for more than 20 years (a passion of mine), and Coming Home: The Southern Vernacular House is by far the best book I have read on these topics.
I have purchased many, many house / design books over the years, some worth the purchase and others not as much. I had to review this particular book because it has jumped to the TOP of my favorites list.
The photos showcase southern vernacular architecture, offering a look at new homes and buildings that have been designed with true reminiscence to the past and traditional styling.
What I like most about the book is the fact it covers the architecture firm's views of the houses, which gave me a real sense of the inspiration behind each home or community included in the book. The back flap of the book jacket shows a photo of the co-authors, James Lowell Strickland and his partners. I was glad the photo was included because after reading the book, it was easy to tell how much passion the authors / architects have for their design work.
I highly recommend this book to others because it has wonderfully balanced content, including new homes with traditional appeal, breath-taking interior design, and some of the most gorgeous exteriors and outdoor spaces I have ever seen in a book. There is just the right amount of narrative combined with many colorful photos with detailed captions.
You don't have to be from the South to appreciate this book's Southern regional charm. It also features a cedar-shake-shingled house in Bridgehampton, NY. The house was designed by the co-authors / architecture firm, who were part of a team that traveled to New England and the Mid-Atlantic states to gather inspiration for the home's design.
