I've been a longtime fan of the various incarnations of the Thunderbolts (the villains posing as heroes, the former villains becoming heroes, Osborn's covert team, etc.) This is a pretty interesting group.
General Ross, or Red Hulk, assembles "a group of like-minded individuals - former loners bound together to accomplish what might have been out of reach on their own".
Pretty big body count in this volume, so it may not be suitable for some younger readers.
SPOILERS below (mostly themes, no big reveals)
A gamma bomb is detonated on the Southeast Asian country of Kata Jaya; this results in over 600 corpses. Ross and his volunteer team of Punisher, Elektra, Deadpool, and Venom enter the country to aid rebel forces in overthrowing the country's cruel dictator. At least, that's the initial story...
I like Daniel Way's rendition of General Ross; he gives off a real Nick Fury vibe of a career military man with connections all over the world. Also: he turns into a Hulk!
I'm curious how long this team of loners can continue to exist, but it is pretty interesting how the characters interact with each other. I found it a little weird that no one in the book mentions that Red Hulk, Punisher, Elektra, and Deadpool were already on a team together (Code Red over in the Hulk comic); but this is Marvel NOW! so maybe that never happened.
I also enjoyed this version of The Leader. It is isn't clear what he is thinking or what he'll do next. Ross' other "secret-weapon", or maybe the 7th member of the team, is also difficult to read.
This was a pretty good first volume. I was kind of hoping for more super throwdowns, but I did get the impression that Way is laying the groundwork for a bigger story.
I bought this title for two main reasons. One being that I was looking for some Marvel Now titles to get into but the other being it has a lot of the characters that I like, particularly Frank Castle 'The Punisher', and Flash Thompson as 'Agent Venom' and Wade Wilson aka 'Deadpool.' Red Hulk and Elektra are cool too but the other three are pretty up there for me in terms of Marvel favorites. Punisher's been good in various runs by many authors. Rick Remender did a great job establishing Flash to be the new 'Venom' host in his run Venom, Vol. 1. But nothing thrilled me more about this than the chance to see Daniel Way return to writing a story featuring Deadpool since I last read his run with the character on Deadpool Volume 1, which was absolutely phenomenal. This a book that features not superheroes but antiheroes. This book had all the makings to be great for me; characters I like, a writer I like. What could go wrong? Well, everything apparently...
This book suffers from a lot of flaws. The art is lacking, it's not awful but it's dull, stagnant and doesn't hold a great visual appeal comparable to most good comic art. The story is bland at best; trust me when I say, Daniel Way is way better than this. But all in all it would have still received a 3 star rating from me had it not been for one thing; the characters being so... well... out of character. I know a character shouldn't be defined by a single run but I think personality traits and trademark themes established for them in previous arcs should carry over to new content.
