If you are comparing the two publications available on the subject as of this writing: Mastering Lync Server 2013 vs. Microsoft Lync Server 2013 Unleashed, Mastering is by far a better investment. I have gone through and used both books and my vote goes for Mastering. The authors have done a great service by explaining SIP protocol in detail to help the reader troubleshoot client connectivity. The book is better organized, with more relevant detail. Neither book however, was very clear about remote client access; specifically, what URLs are exposed to the Internet by the Edge pool, and what URLs are exposed by the Reverse Proxy servers. Mastering has a better handle on the prerequisite roles and features that need to be installed on Lync servers and how best to set up your SQL back end. I give this book 4 stars, and downgraded Unleashed from 4 stars to 2 stars.

In-depth technical review of Lync 2013, voice and UM integration.
Pros: thorough and comprehensive.
Cons: Does not align well to exam topics for those looking for Lync 2013 certification via Microsoft exams 70-336 and 70-337. I recommend reviewing exam "Skills Measured" (e.g.[...] ) , and then mapping sections of the book to those.
Update December 18,2013: I passed the 70-336 exam (Lync Core Solutions) with the help of this book. The Lync voice exam (70-337) is highly technical from telephony perspective, and I strongly suggest building a lab environment to mimic real-world Lync Voice scenarios, and not relying on this book alone, as the exam material is not fully covered.
