I bought the Pride and Prejudice BabyLit when my dear friend had her first baby girl and it's since become a huge favorite with both Mummy and daughter. When I heard that Sense and Sensibility was also getting the baby treatment I was elated because my friend was expecting again and it would make the perfect baby gift for her second daughter, I pre-ordered it instantly.
The only reason I'm giving this review 4 stars instead of 5 is because I was frustrated by how many times the release date was pushed back, The original release date was almost 2 months before my friends due date but it was changed so many times that I ended up having to buy a different book at the baby's birth only to have my original gift arrive a week later. I didn't mind (the more books the better!) but it did throw a wrench in my otherwise perfect plan.
The book itself is highly adorable, the artwork the same clean, fun pictures as the P&P edition. The opposites theme is a perfect homage to the original work and is full of words that will be useful to early language development (Big for "Northland Park" and Little for "Barton Cottage") as well as opposites that only the parents will truly appreciate ("Married" and "Single" are particularly humorous). When I paged through the book before wrapping it up I instantly decided that I'd have to buy myself a copy (even though I'm single with no children) just to keep on my shelf and look cute.
Some of the complaints lodged against the BabyLit books were that the vocabulary is too advanced for babies. I agree, but I see that as a plus rather than a downside. My friend claims that her daughter (who isn't even two weeks old yet) completely loves the book and has had it read to her several times already because Mum and Grandma love it so much.
